This wasn't the first song I originally thought I would have produced, but I am so excited that this is how things turned out. It turned out to be unbelievably fitting, a physical and lyrical bridge between my first career in the food industry and my newly refined focus on music and writing - dare I say (?!), my second career. I must give tons of credit, as well, to Patrick Cooke of Portal Eyes, my producer and the musician behind the instrumentation. I wrote the song - the lyrics, the vocal melodies and harmonies - and gave him an outline of how I wanted the song to sound along with some specific aspects, and he filled it in from there...and damn, did he deliver!
I am so stoked to present my first song in this borderline blues-rock style, which Patrick was immediately in tune with. The funky bass line was an absolute must because, for me at least, that's what hooks the soul and gets that head boppin and those hips poppin. The dingalingy bells at the top keep it lifted and playful. The driving beat is a steady and grounded anchor for the sultry verses and dramatic chorus. This is a style of music that lives deep in my bones and had no reservations about coming to the surface.
Are the lyrics about love, one might ask? Are they about being a chef? Are they about the blurring and defining of one's boundaries? Yes, yes, and yes. It is sass, but not flippantly so. It is flirty, but not infinitely so. It is co-existance, but not blindly so. It is about getting out of one's own way and not ruining the moments when everything is good, everything is gravy. Stop overanalyzing, stop self-sabotaging, stop sending mixed messages. Get into the body and out of the mind - our bodies do not lie to us, unlike our brains.
I can say with some certainty that you will likely hear more of this style from me, but as the name PrismHoney might suggest, I have many songs in the pipeline that embrace the spectrum of genres, and I look forward to playing in those sandboxes as well. Can't wait to get some new projects going in the months ahead.
Stream away, my friends, and as always, thanks for listening!
